Build an Auditable Figure Brief With NotebookLM

Turn a source notebook into one checked chart, a compact methods note, and a reusable figure brief for a paper, deck, or research template.

A figure brief keeps the question, checked data, methods, and limits attached to every AI-assisted chart you publish.

Start with one question a chart can answer

Use a narrow question such as "How did response time change across the three study periods?" A broad request for insights tends to produce a decorative chart with no clear job. Write the audience and intended decision beside the question. A chart for a methods section needs different detail from one made for a five-minute client briefing.

Build a source boundary

Add only the papers, reports, tables, or notes that may supply the figure. Keep background reading in a separate notebook. For each source, record its date, population, unit of measurement, and any missing values. Google announced in June 2026 that NotebookLM can use advanced reasoning and a cloud computer to generate charts, spreadsheets, and slide decks. Those outputs still need a human check against the supplied material.

Ask for a data table before a chart

  • Extract only values that answer the stated question.
  • Add columns for source, page or table number, unit, sample, and period.
  • Leave a cell blank when the source does not report a value.
  • Flag incompatible definitions instead of combining them.

Run the row check

Open every cited passage or table and compare it with the extracted row. Check decimal places, percentages, date ranges, and category labels. Then confirm that comparable-looking rows measure the same thing. For example, mean completion time and median completion time do not belong in one trend line unless the chart makes that difference explicit.

Generate the smallest useful figure

Choose a form that matches the comparison. Use bars for a small set of categories and a line only when the horizontal axis is genuinely ordered, usually by time. Keep the title factual. Label the unit on the axis and put essential limits in a subtitle or note. If the figure needs a paragraph of explanation before it makes sense, simplify it.

Write a six-line figure brief

  • Question: the precise question the figure answers.
  • Finding: one sentence that states what the plotted values show.
  • Source: direct links plus page, table, or section references.
  • Method: extraction, cleaning, and calculation steps.
  • Limits: missing data, definition changes, and weak comparisons.
  • Reuse: the paper section, slide, article, or template where the figure belongs.

Package the audit trail

Save the checked table, figure, brief, and source list together. Use plain filenames such as figure-01-data.csv and figure-01-method.txt. A reader should be able to trace each plotted value without reopening your entire notebook. This folder can also become the working part of a research writing toolkit or a Gumroad figure-planning template.

Publication gate

  • Every plotted value matches a named source location.
  • The chart uses one consistent unit or explains conversions.
  • The caption separates observation from interpretation.
  • The methods note records any calculation or removed row.
  • The final file contains no private, licensed, or sensitive source material.

Use the workflow again

Duplicate the six-line brief for the next figure instead of duplicating the chart and changing its labels. The brief forces the question, evidence, and limits to travel with the visual.
